Easy Writer is a word processor and a worldbuilding workspace in one Windows app: your manuscript, your codex of characters and places, a timeline that catches contradictions, maps, spreadsheets, and more — all local, all yours.
Free early-access preview · Windows 10/11 (64-bit) · No account, no telemetry
Characters, places, factions, items — organised in categories you define, with the fields you choose. Type a name (or a nickname) in your prose and it links itself to the codex entry: hover for a card, jump to the details, see every mention.
Merge duplicates, track how a character's title changes across the story's years, and keep a gallery of art on every entry.
Events, eras, and lifespans on your own calendar — invented months, invented reckonings. The validating timeline flags the problems you'd otherwise find in a bad review: a character in two places at once, a scene before its hero is born, travel that's impossibly fast.
You can also write rules of your own — “X must be King by year 412” — and the timeline holds you to them.
Draw regions, routes, pins, and movable tokens over your own artwork. Link them to codex entries and to timeline events — a journey drawn on the map is checked against the dates in the timeline.
A per-region reveal flag gives game masters a player-safe view of the same map.
Everything below ships in the free preview today — this is the shipped feature list, not the roadmap.
Rich text, named styles, tables, footnotes, embeds, focus/typewriter/distraction-free modes, page layout view, project-wide find & replace with regex.
A project is a single .ewriter file you can copy, back up, or email — or a plain folder of text files that diffs beautifully under Git or Perforce. Your choice, convertible both ways.
Fountain editing with auto-format and Tab cycling, industry-standard pagination, revisions on coloured pages, Final Draft (.fdx) round-trip, Courier PDF export.
Point it at any OpenAI-compatible endpoint — cloud or fully local. Chat, inline assists, canon-consistency checks grounded in your codex, semantic search. Off by default; your key, your model, your data.
A citation manager with APA/MLA/Chicago, BibTeX import, an in-app PDF reader with page-accurate quote capture, and unsupported-claim tracking.
A real formula engine with A1 references and Excel-style functions, cell formatting, CSV round-trip — plus bar, line, area, and pie charts you can embed in documents.
Plot threads and character arcs, beat sheets (Three-Act, Hero's Journey, Save the Cat!), corkboard, kanban board, submissions tracker, and an agenda.
Word counts, goals, sprints, streaks, pacing and tension curves, POV balance, readability, style checks — and an exportable manuscript health report.
Word, Scrivener, yWriter, Obsidian, Notion, Manuskript, and plain text — your existing project comes with you.
DOCX, EPUB 3, typeset PDF, standard manuscript RTF, Markdown, Fountain/.fdx — or generate a searchable static website of your whole world.
Automatic backups, version history with visual diffs, crash recovery, and a three-way merge when a sync client or co-author changes files on disk.
A JavaScript macro console scripting the live project, a C++ plugin API, custom themes, rebindable shortcuts, and a complete Spanish translation.
No account. No telemetry. No cloud lock-in. Your project is a file (or a folder) on your disk, in formats you can read with a text editor. The only network requests Easy Writer ever makes are the AI calls you explicitly configure — to the provider you chose.
